KGH Foundation launches campaign for next-gen surgery in Kelowna

$6 Million campaign going for Robotic Assisted Surgery

The KGH Foundation has launched the next phase of its Closer to Home Than You Think campaign, announcing a $6-million pledge to bring robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) to Kelowna General Hospital. The surgical robot, named “Vinni,” will mark the first of its kind in B.C.’s Interior.

The commitment represents half of the $12 million required to purchase the equipment and train medical staff in its use. Until now, RAS has only been available in Vancouver and, more recently, Victoria.

A special robotics campaign launch party was hosted at Red Bird Brewing this week, where the foundation's supporters, donors, board, and community celebrated the new endeavor and learned more about the impact of this technology.

“It’s the next step forward for us,” said Dr. Maurice Blitz, Chief of Surgery and Thoracic Surgeon at KGH. “We’re already at the leading edge of surgical services, but we want to stay there—and go beyond it. Having surgical robotics in Kelowna not only improves outcomes for patients, but helps us attract and retain top surgical talent.”

While provinces like Alberta, Ontario and Quebec have embraced robotic-assisted technology, B.C. has lagged behind. With RAS coming to KGH, patients from across the Interior will be able to access world-class care for urology, colorectal and thoracic surgeries without leaving the region.

Dr. Blitz said the technology is especially effective in surgeries requiring high precision in tight spaces.

“Where it really excels is in small, confined areas of the body where our hands don’t necessarily fit,” he said. “This allows us to operate with full range of motion and improved precision—ultimately leading to better cancer surgery outcomes and fewer complications.”

Beyond the clinical benefits, Blitz said the investment is about preparing for the future.

“Kelowna General Hospital serves you—your family, your friends, your neighbours,” he said. “Hopefully you never need us, but if you do, you want the care to be as efficient and excellent as possible. That’s what the people of Kelowna and the Interior deserve.”

The KGH Foundation hopes to have Vinni operational by late fall.
